How to Read an Electronic / Smart Electricity Meter (kWh)
Modern Indian electricity meters (manufactured by Secure Meters, Genus Power, L&T, HPL, Schneider, or Hexing) feature a liquid crystal display (LCD) that cycles through various electrical parameters every 5 to 10 seconds. When reading your meter to verify your electricity bill, look specifically for the cumulative active energy register.
Locate the 'kWh' Screen
Wait for the display to scroll to the screen marked with kWh or Cumulative kWh. Ignore screens showing kVArh, kVAh, Volts (V), or Amps (A).
Note the Whole Digits
Record the main integer digits (usually 5 or 6 digits). If there is a decimal point with a trailing red or boxed digit, exclude the fraction or round to the nearest whole integer.
Subtract Previous Reading
Find the Previous Reading printed on your latest electricity bill slip. Subtract this from your new reading to determine exact consumed units.
The Mathematical Meter Reading Formula
- Current Reading: Meter reading recorded at the end of the billing period.
- Previous Reading: Meter reading recorded at the start of the billing period.
- MF (Meter Multiplier): Constant multiplier (1.0 for domestic connections).
