State Electricity Subsidy Schemes in India (Free Units & Zero Bills)

State governments in India offer electricity subsidies to help domestic consumers manage household living costs. These subsidies are credited directly onto your electricity bill—either as a direct deduction on energy charges or as a full 'Zero Bill'.

However, almost all state subsidies come with strict consumption thresholds. Crossing the limit by even 1 single unit can void the subsidy for that billing cycle.

1. Delhi (DERC Scheme)

Consumers who opt-in receive 100% subsidy (Zero Bill) for consumption up to 200 units. For 201 to 400 units, a 50% subsidy (up to ₹800/month) is provided. Consumption above 400 units receives ₹0 subsidy.

2. Karnataka (Gruha Jyothi Scheme)

Provides up to 200 units of free electricity per month. The exact entitled free units for each home are calculated based on that household's 12-month average consumption plus 10%. If total monthly consumption exceeds your entitled quota or 200 units, you pay the regular KERC tariff for excess units.

3. Tamil Nadu (TANGEDCO Scheme)

Every domestic consumer receives the first 100 units free on their bi-monthly electricity bill. Subsidized tariff rates apply for consumption between 101 and 500 units.

4. Punjab (300 Units Scheme)

Provides 300 units free per month (600 units on a 2-month billing cycle) to all eligible domestic consumers.
