Gruha Jyothi Scheme 2026: 200 Free Units Electricity Subsidy Rules & Calculation Math

Published: August 11, 2026Verified Govt of Karnataka Energy Department Notification

The Gruha Jyothi Scheme is one of Karnataka's most popular public welfare initiatives, providing up to 200 units of free electricity per month to eligible domestic households across BESCOM, HESCOM, GESCOM, MESCOM, and CESC utility zones.

Key Eligibility & Entitlement Rules

  1. Domestic LT-2a Category Only: Applies strictly to residential connections. Commercial or industrial connections are not eligible.
  2. 12-Month Average + 10% Bonus Entitlement: Your free monthly unit cap is computed by taking your average monthly consumption for the preceding FY (e.g. 140 units) and adding a 10% buffer (14 units), giving an entitled cap of 154 units.
  3. 200 Units Monthly Maximum Cap: Even if your entitlement formula yields a higher number, the maximum monthly subsidy cap is strictly 200 kWh.
  4. Zero Subsidy Above 200 Units: If your monthly meter reading exceeds 200 units (e.g., 205 kWh), the entire 100% subsidy is forfeited and the consumer must pay the full bill.
